Bronx, N.Y. – (September 1, 2022) – Hofstra's Anja Suttner scored the lone goal of the contest on a penalty kick, while Skylar Kuzmich had five saves, as the Pride downed the Fordham Rams, 1-0, in women's soccer action at Jack Coffey Field on Thursday night.
The only scoring play of the game came after Fordham's
Olivia Redden fouled Leah Iglesias in the box in the 19
th minute, awarding a penalty kick to Hofstra. Anja Suttner converted the penalty kick, sliding the shot into the lower right corner of the net.
Fordham had a number of chances to get the equalizer, but Pride goalkeeper Skylar Kuzmich stood tall. Off a free kick in the 40
th minute,
Caitlin Kennedy got a shot around the wall to the left post, but Kuzmich made a diving save to keep it a 1-0 score.
Hofstra almost made it 2-0 in the 54
th minute, as a long corner got over Fordham goalkeeper
Kyla King toward the far post. Suttner's shot toward the goal was knocked away by Redden, keeping the deficit at one.
The Rams had three more chances in the second half, the first of which was off the foot of
Caroline Monahan in the 76
th minute, which went right into Kuzmich's hands.
Then in the 85
th minute,
Sidney Nicholas took a pass from the top of the box on the near side. She cut inside the defender for a shot to the near post that Kuzmich was just able to deflect away. On the next Fordham possession,
Cambrie Arboreen got a shot toward net, but was knocked down by Kuzmich.
Kuzmich finished with fives saves in the shutout victory, while King recorded four saves for the Rams.
Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, September 4
th, as the team heads to Yale for a 5:00 PM match.
