Fairfax, Va. – One more to go. Led by
Devon Miller's brilliant effort in the circle, Fordham softball advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship final with a 1-0 victory over top-seeded George Washington. With the win, the Rams improve to 29-19 on the year.
Â
Miller twirled her 11
th career shutout, tied for sixth all-time in program history, with just five baserunners allowed and three strikeouts. The junior matched the Colonials' Sierra Lange pitch for pitch in an epic duel, but it was Lange who allowed the game's lone run – a double off the bat of
Brianna Pinto to score
Amanda Carey. The win is Miller's 10
th of the campaign.
Â
In the first, Miller worked around a one-out walk to Alexa Williams with a strikeout looking to Alessandra Ponce and one swinging to Mia Parker. In the top of the second,
Julia Martine was hit by a pitch and stole second but she was deemed to have left first early and was ruled out.
Bailey Enoch drew one of her two walks but was subsequently left stranded. After a 1-2-3 inning from Miller, the Rams struck in the third. Carey led off with a booming double off the top of the left field wall, narrowly missing a home run by inches, and was brought in by Pinto, who doubled over the head of Williams in left.
Â
The Colonials put the lead-off runner on in the third and fourth, but Miller worked out of trouble. First with a pair of infield pop-ups and a groundout by Williams, then a flyout a slick play in the field by Martine – catching a hard-hit line drive by Hannah Eslick and doubling up pinch runner Gabby Polsky at first.
Â
The two pitchers traded clean frames before George Washington threatened again in the sixth, Williams doubling with two outs but left stranded when Miller induced a groundout from Ponce. In the seventh, Parker led off with a single up the middle but Miller grinded for three straight outs, two foulouts and the game-ending flyout to
Michaela Carter in left.
Â
Enoch reached base all three times with a single and two walks with Carey and Pinto having the other two hits.
Â
The Rams await the winner of Friday's second elimination game between George Washington and fifth-seeded Dayton, who defeated Saint Joseph's in the second game. First pitch of the Championship final is set for noon on Saturday on ESPN+.
