Baseball Tops Monmouth, 8-5

Gabe Karslo Ties Career-High With Eight Strikeouts to Earn Win, while Casey Brown Nets Home Run & Three RBI

Bronx, N.Y. – (March 26, 2022) – The positive momentum for the Fordham baseball team kept on rolling on Saturday, as Gabe Karslo tied a career-high with eight strikeouts over six-plus innings to lead the Rams to an 8-5 win over the Monmouth Hawks at Houlihan Park on Saturday.

Fordham (5-15) manufactured a 1-0 lead right out the gate in the first inning.  Jake Guercio led off with a single up the middle and stole second.  After a ground out moved Guercio to third, Zach Selinger continued his hot hitting with an RBI-single to left.

The two teams exchanged runs in the second for a 2-1 score before Fordham scored twice in the third for a 4-1 edge on back-to-back RBI-singles by Sebastian Mexico and Cian Sahler.

The Rams extended their lead to 7-1 in the sixth inning.  Selinger drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second by Mexico.  Sahler followed with an RBI-double to score Selinger, while Casey Brown crushed a two-run home run to right, his first of the season.

Monmouth responded with a three-run seventh to cut into the Fordham lead at 7-4, but the Rams got one back in the bottom of the frame.  Selinger registered his second RBI-single of the day to score Guercio, after he and Jack Harnisch were issued consecutive walks.

A solo home run by Alex Barker accounted for Monmouth's final run of the game, as Fordham's bullpen held strong, as Joseph Quintal and Ben Kovel got the final six outs for the 8-5 final score.

Gabe Karslo (1-3) earned the win, as he tied a career-high with eight strikeouts over six-plus innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  Kovel recorded the save with a scoreless ninth inning.  At the plate, Sahler was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBI, while Selinger was 2-for-3 with run scored and two RBI.  Brown ended the day with a home run and three RBI.

The final game of the series between Fordham and Monmouth is slated for 1:00 PM on Sunday at Monmouth.
