Defense keeps Seawolves in check; Tim DeMorat throws three touchdowns passes

Bronx, N.Y. – For the first five games of the 2022 season, the Fordham University offense was stealing the headlines as the unit posted eye-popping numbers. For the past two games, the defensive side has joined in the fun, holding the opponent to 14 points in each game as the Rams defeated the Stony Brook University, 45-14, on Jack Coffey Field.
 
With the win, Fordham, who entered the game ranked 17th in the latest NCAA FCS Coaches Poll and 22nd in the STATS FCS Poll, improves to 6-1 on the season while Stony Brook falls to 0-6.
 
Sophomore linebacker James Conway, the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, led the Fordham defense, who shutout the Seawolves through the first three quarters, with a game-high 15 total tackles, including 2.5 for loss and on sack. Grad student linebacker Ryan Greenhagen added eight stops for the Rams, who allowed just 82 net rushing yards.
 
On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback Tim DeMorat, the reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, completed 27 of 39 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns with eight of the passes going to senior wide receiver Dequece Carter for 140 yards and a score. Senior wide out MJ Wright caught three passes for 62 yards with two of the grabs good for a touchdown.
 
In the offensive backfield, sophomore Julius Loughridge recorded his second straight 100-yard game, gaining 111 yards on just nine carries with two touchdowns.
 
The Fordham offense got off to a bit of a slow start, punting on its first three possessions but Loughridge got the Rams one the board with a four-year run with 3:11 left in the period.
 
The Ram offense made up for the slow first quarter with a 24-point second quarter as, following a Brandon Peskin 24-yard field goal, Loughridge scored on a 42-yard run and DeMorat connected on touchdown passes to Wright (38 yards) and Garrett Cody (17 yards).

• After punting just once over the previous two games, sophomore punter Will Haslett was called into action five times today, averaging 45.6 yards/punt.
 
• Various Rams wore pink gloves during the game as a recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month.
 
• Fordham celebrated new university president Tania Tetlow's birthday at halftime as everyone in attendance received a cupcake and sang Happy Birthday to her.

What's Next?
• After a week off, the Rams return to Patriot League action by traveling to Worcester, Mass., to face the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders on Fitton Field on Saturday, October 29, at 1:00 p.m. for the annual Ram-Crusader Cup game.
 
• It will be the 60th meeting between Fordham and Holy Cross on the gridiron.
 
• The Crusaders lead the all-time series, which started in 1902, 32-25-2, including a 52-24 win last year on November 13 on Jack Coffey Field as Matthew Sluka gained 104 yards on the ground with two touchdowns and he threw for 272 yards and two scores.
