Swimming & Diving Sweeps Meet at Iona

Women Down Gaels, 180-107, while Men Post 152-118 Over Iona

New Rochelle, N.Y. – (January 26, 2022) – The Fordham swimming & diving team kicked off a busy week of competition on Wednesday night at Iona College, with the Rams sweeping the meet from the Gaels.  The Fordham women posted a 180-107 over Iona with the men recording a 152-118 victory.
 
Fordham freshman Ainhoa Martin led the way for the women, as she won two individual events and was a part of both winning relays.  She took first in the 200 butterfly (2:04.67) and 200 backstroke (2:06.73) events, while joining the 200 medley relay (1:47.12) and 400 freestyle relay (3:34.23) in those event wins.
 
Fellow freshman Madeline Bergin and graduate student Becky Kamau were also on those relay wins, while having one individual win each.  Bergin won the 50 freestyle in 24.70 seconds with Kamau taking first in the 100 butterfly in 59.09 seconds.
 
Additional wins for the Rams came from Ellen Brooks in the 1000 freestyle (10:40.78), Emilie Krog in the 200 freestyle (1:55.14), Natalie Ortof in the one-meter dive (278.10), Molly Farrell in the three-meter dive (256.35), Jessica Zebrowski in the 100 freestyle (52.98), Leire Martin in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.46), Audrey Tirrell in the 500 freestyle (5:10.18), and Vaula Vekkeli in the 200 individual medley.

On the men's side, senior Spencer Clarke had a big night with two individual event wins, while being on both winning relays.  He won the 100 (46.69) and 200 (1:42.96) freestyle events, while being part of the top 200 medley relay (1:35.59) and 400 freestyle relay (3:07.46) teams.
 
Alex Wilhelm was also a multi-event winner on Wednesday, taking first in the 100 (51.41) and 200 (1:54.74) backstroke events, as well as the 200 individual medley (1:54.89).
 
Other event winners for the Rams included Alexander Shah in the 50 freestyle (21.53), John Kresl in the one-meter dive (195.75), and Daniel Langlois in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.03).
 
The Rams are back in the pool on Saturday, January 29th, when they host Massachusetts for a 1:00 PM meet.
