Men’s Soccer In Action Twice Before Start of A-10 Play

Rams Travel to Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday with the Battle of the Bronx against Manhattan on Tuesday

Bronx, N.Y. – (September 10, 2021) – The Fordham men's soccer team continues their run of local showdowns over the next few days, as the Rams take on Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday night and Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon in a pair of road matches.

The Rams are still in search of their first win of the season after playing to a scoreless draw with LIU this past Saturday and falling to St. John's, 1-0, on Labor Day.

Fairleigh Dickinson enters play on Saturday at 2-2 on the year, having won its last contest versus Lafayette by a 3-0 score.  The Knights are led by Noah Chia and Joshua Ferreira, who each have two goals on the season, while Diego Arribas has a goal and two assists through four games.

Manhattan is 1-2 on the young season and will play Columbia before its showdown with Fordham on Tuesday.  After winning its opener against Lehigh, 1-0, the Jaspers dropped matches to Holy Cross and Temple.  In net, Manhattan has split the time evenly between Hunter Kochiss and Danny DiMarco.  DiMarco has six saves over 135 minutes of action with Kochiss having three stops in that same amount of time.

SERIES HISTORY: The Rams and Knights will meet up on Saturday for the second straight year, after a 20-year gap between matches.  Fordham won that contest last spring by a 2-0 count, but FDU still leads the all-time series at 22-6-4.

Then on Tuesday, Fordham will renew its longtime rivalry with Manhattan in the Battle of the Bronx after a year hiatus.  Fordham is 30-14-3 in the Battle of the Bronx, but it was Manhattan that came away with the win in the last two meetings in 2018 and 2019.

LAST TIME OUT: An early first half goal by Andrew Bennett proved to be the difference on Monday night, as the St. John's Red Storm outlasted the Fordham Rams, 1-0 in men's soccer action at Belson Stadium in Queens.

St. John's scored the lone goal of the match in the 11th minute, as a couple of quick passes between Lucas Bartlett and Brandon Knapp found Andrew Bennett at the six-yard box for his first goal of the season.

Fordham had a pair of quality chances in the first half to tie the game.  In the 20th minute, Max Rogers launched a corner kick into the box where the goalkeeper was caught out of position.  The ball landed at the feet of Conrado Duhour for a shot that was knocked off the line by Matt Forster.

Then in the 33rd minute, Jack Sluys came in from the left side and blasted a shot from the top of the box, that was parried over the net by St. John's goalkeeper Luka Gavran.

In the second half, the Rams' best chance was in the 55th minute right in front that almost equalized the match.  Matt Sloan chipped a cross that deflected to the middle of the box.  Luke McNamara got to the ball for a shot but was grabbed by Gavran just before crossing the line.

Gavran finished the game with four saves for the shutout, while Fordham's Callum James had two saves.

WHO'S NEXT: Following the St. John's match, the Rams continue their road schedule at Fairleigh Dickinson on September 11th and at Manhattan on September 14th.
