Baseball Splits Twin Bill at Saint Joseph’s

Mikulski Strikes Out 15 in Complete Game Win; Hawks Power Past Rams in Game 2

Philadelphia, Pa. – (April 24, 2021) – It was an up and down day for the Fordham baseball team on Saturday afternoon as the Rams split their Atlantic 10 doubleheader with the Saint Joseph's Hawks at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In game one, Fordham's Matt Mikulski put together another impressive performance, striking out 15 batters in a 3-1 win over the Hawks.

Fordham (17-12, 4-3 A-10) opened the scoring with some two-out magic in the second.  C.J. Vazquez started the rally with a bunt single, followed by an RBI-double by Jason Coules, scoring Vazquez.  Alvin Melendez then plated Coules with a single to left for a 2-0 lead.

The Rams made it 3-0 in the sixth inning, as Zach Selinger was hit by a pitch and then came around to score on a double down the left field line by Nick Labella.

Mikulski (6-0) made those runs hold up, as he allowed just two hits in the seven-inning contest.  The Hawks were able to end his scoreless innings streak at 26.0, when Andrew Cossetti hit a solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth.  Besides that run, Mikulski only allowed a single and three walks, while striking out 15 for his fifth double-digit strikeout game of the season.  At the plate, Vazquez led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

In game two, it was all Saint Joseph's (13-9, 8-3 A-10), scoring early and often in an 11-1 win over the Rams.

With the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, Saint Joseph's scored seven times to take an 8-1 lead.  The big hit of the inning with a three-run home run by Nate Thomas.

The Hawks then scored twice in the third and once in the fourth for an 11-1 advantage.

Saint Joseph's Lucas Rollins kept Fordham in check, allowing just one run on six hits in the seven-inning complete game, posting four strikeouts.

The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 PM.
