St. Louis, Mo. – (November 12, 2021) – Heading into the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship semifinals, it was a pretty safe bet that the Saint Louis-Fordham match-up was going to be a knockdown, drag out fight at Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. That proved just to be the case, as the two teams played to a scoreless draw, leading to a penalty kick shootout to decide who would play for the Atlantic 10 title on Sunday afternoon.
With the shootout tied at two, Saint Louis' Patrick Schulte made the first save of the shootout, while Mujeeb Murana and Iwan Webster connected on the next two efforts to push the Billikens past the Rams, 4-2, and into the championship match.
Each team has golden opportunities in regulation play and overtime to get on the board.
For Fordham,
Matt Sloan had a one-time chance in the 31
st minute that just missed the right post, while
Galen Flynn got open on the left side of the box in the 54
th minute for a one-on-one chance against Patrick Schulte that Schulte was able to parry the chance away.
For Saint Louis, John Klein had a chance in the final seconds of the second overtime, where he found himself open in the center of the box, but he blistered a shot just outside the right post, pushing the match into the shootout.
Following the conclusion of the championship, Fordham's
Luke McNamara was named to the All-Championship Team for the second straight year.
