Baseball Rallies Past Wagner, 11-5

Rams Register 11 Runs on 12 Hits, while Pitchers Combine for 12 Strikeouts

Bronx, N.Y. – (March 11, 2020) – C.J. Vazquez went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Matt Tarabek and Nick Labella each drove in two runs, as the Fordham Rams posted an 11-5 win over the Wagner Seahawks in baseball action at Houlihan Park on Wednesday.

With the win, Fordham improved to 10-6, extending its win streak to nine games, while Wagner fell to 6-8.

Wagner took the early lead at 2-0 in the third inning, getting an RBI-double by Henry Martinez and an RBI-ground out by Cody Bey.  Fordham answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, when Jake MacKenzie connected on a two-out double to score Jason Coules from third.

The Seahawks picked up three runs in the fourth to make it a 5-1 game, highlighted by a two-run single by Bey.  The Rams came right back with three runs of their own, cutting the deficit back to one at 5-4.  With runners at second and third and two outs, Matt Tarabek knocked in two runs with an infield single.  Tarabek then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch.
Garrett Crowley
Garrett Crowley earned his first win on Wednesday.

Fordham tied the game at five in the fifth.  Coules reached on a double, extending his hit streak to 13 games, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alvin Melendez.

The Rams then took the lead with a three-run sixth inning to go up 8-5.  Nick Labella started the rally with a single and stole second.  After moving to third on a ground out, Labella scored on a single from Billy Godrick.  Fordham would later pick up two runs on two Wagner errors for the three-run lead.

Fordham wasn't finished offensively tacking on three more runs in the seventh, making it 11-5.  MacKenzie led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by C.J. Vazquez.  After a stolen base by Vazquez, Labella followed with a two-run single to right.  Labella then stole second, moved to third on an errant throw, and scored on a ground out by Andy Semo.

That was enough cushion for the Fordham pitching staff, as eight Fordham pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts, and only one hit allowed after the fourth inning.  Garrett Crowley (1-0) was credited with the win, as he struck out four batters over 1.2 scoreless innings.  Joseph Quintal, Brian Weissert, Alex Hernandez, and Jack Popolizio each tossed a scoreless inning in the game, with Alex Henderson allowing one hit over his 1.1 innings of work.

At the plate, Vazquez finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Tarabek and Labella each had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.  Coules and Godrick also added two runs scored each.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, March 13th, when they play St. John's at 3:00 PM.
