Greenville, S.C. – (March 1, 2020) – Behind another 14-hit barrage for the offense and a combined seven RBI from
Jason Coules and
Nick Labella, the Fordham Rams completed a series sweep of the Furman Paladins by a score of 11-3 at Latham Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
With the win, Fordham has won four in a row to improve to 5-6 on the year, while Furman fell to 5-6.
Fordham got out to another quick start, taking a 2-0 lead in the second.
Zach Selinger drew a one-out walk and was followed by a two-run home run to left center by
Nick Labella, his first of the season.
Furman answered immediately in the bottom of the frame, getting a pair of RBI-singles by Logan Taplett and Jordan Starkes to tie the game at two.
The Rams got the lead back in the third, when
Jason Coules singled home
C.J. Vazquez, who reached on a double, for a 3-2 edge.
Fordham added to the lead with two runs in the fourth, making it a 5-2 game.
Andy Semo was hit by a pitch to start the inning and came around to score on a double by Labella. After a sacrifice by
Billy Godrick,
Matt Tarabek singled to left to score Labella from third.
The Rams continued to pour on the offense with two runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth inning to put the game out of reach for an 11-3 final. In the seventh, Fordham scored on RBI-singles by Coules and
Jake MacKenzie, while the eighth inning saw an RBI-triple from MacKenzie and a sacrifice fly by Melendez. A two-run single with the bases loaded by Coules in the ninth inning closed out the scoring for the Rams.
Cory Wall tied a season-high with six strikeouts on Sunday.
The offensive barrage was plenty for Fordham starter
Cory Wall (1-1), who earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits over five innings with six strikeouts, tying a season-high. Garret Crowley struck out four over his two innings of work with Melendez and
Ben Kovel each throwing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. In all, Fordham pitching struck out 14 batters on the afternoon.
At the plate, Coules extended his career-long hit streak to eight games, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, which tied a career-best. Tarabek also finished with three hits on the afternoon, while Labella was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, three runs scored, and three RBI. Vazquez and MacKenzie also had two-hit games for the Rams.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Wednesday, March 4
th, when the Rams begin a six-game homestand against NJIT at Houlihan Park, beginning at 3:00 PM.
