Kaitlyn Downey Named A-10 Player of the Week

Junior Captain Posts Massive 16-Point, 20-Rebound Double-Double in Win at Stony Brook

League Release

Newport News, Va. – Junior Kaitlyn Downey was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday, the league office announced, after leading the Rams to a season-opening win at Stony Brook last Wednesday. This is Downey's first career weekly accolade from the conference.

"I'm really happy for Kaitlyn because we have been challenging her and she has answered that challenge in a big way." Head coach Stephanie Gaitley said.

Downey, one of three team captains this year after serving as one as a sophomore a year ago, put up a massive 16-point, 20-rebound double-double over just 30 minutes of action against the Seawolves, shooting 3-of-5 from behind the arc, as well. She became just the seventh Ram to reach the 20-rebound milestone, tying for 11th all-time in a single contest and seventh-most in a road or neutral game. Downey also handed out three assists to just one turnover and corralled five boards on the offensive glass.

The Hastings-on-Hudson native averaged 9.7 points per game a season ago while appearing in all 32 contests, making 31 starts. She led the team in blocks, with 23, while adding 68 assists and 35 steals and shooting 38.1.% from the floor.

Fordham's home opener against Manhattan, originally scheduled for this Wednesday evening, has been cancelled due to positive COVID-19 test results for the Jaspers. The Rams will next be in action this Saturday at Quinnipiac, with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
