Bronx, N.Y. – Head coach
Ian Choi announced two additions to his 2020 recruiting class on Tuesday afternoon, with outside hitter Isabella Sakran and libero/defensive specialist Emily Weirick joining the Class of 2024. The pair will join Lauren Arzuaga, Isabel Fichtel, and Whitley Moody, who
signed their NLIs in November.
Emily Weirick
Sakran, a 6'0 outside/right-side hitter from Miami, Fla., earned four letters at Gulliver Prep. A team captain each of the last two years, she helped lead the Raiders to two District finals as a freshman and junior and a District championship as a sophomore. She earned Miami Dade All-County honors as a sophomore and junior. Sakran played for Tribe Volleyball Club the last four years and was included on Prep Volleyball's 2020 Watch List for Right Sides. Off the court, she co-founded Breakout Volleyball, an organization providing volleyball training for At-Risk girls in inner-city elementary schools in Miami.
Isabella Sakran
"Isa comes in with a live arm and great versatility. She can play six rotations and hit on both pins. She'll add some competitive velocity to the offense."
Weirick, a 6'1 libero, hails from La Cañada Flintridge, Calif. where she earned four varsity letters at La Cañada high school. A team captain each of the last two years, she was named All-Area First Team and Rio Hondo League Second Team as a freshman, First Team All-League and All-Area as a sophomore, plus a PrepVolleyball Soph 79 honorable mention, and a All-League First Team selection as a senior after returning from an injury that cost her her junior campaign. She will graduate as the Spartans' all-time leader in digs per set (4.1) and second in digs per match (11.2). She holds the record for most matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs (47), most 20-kill efforts (six), most 20-kill, 10-dig double-doubles (four), and most 20-dig matches (four), and is also the single-match record holder for kills (29) and digs (27) and single-set kills (10) and digs (12). Weirick played her club ball with San Gabriel Elite. Off the court, she was a member of her high school's Athletic Leadership Council and a member of the California Scholarship Federation Honor Society. She also volunteered with the National Charity League and the Pasadena Humane Society.
"Emily is the tallest libero I've ever coached. At 6'1, she covers a lot of ground, but I'm most excited to see her competitive passion on the court."
