Morgan Williams Named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week

Senior Libero Smashed Single-Match Digs Record on Saturday

Newport News, Va. – Fordham volleyball senior libero Morgan Williams picked up her second Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week award on Monday, the league announced, after averaging 7.45 digs per set over the weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational and breaking the school record for digs in a match, with 42, at Dartmouth. It is her third career weekly accolade.

"Well-deserved honor in conjunction with that record-setting match for Mo," head coach Ian Choi said, "Her attention to detail combined with a coachable mindset set her up for this achievement. She's really embracing her role as a selfless service-oriented leader for this squad and we're all proud of her for that. Now we're all just waiting on her to deliver the team those Late Night with Stephen Colbert tickets."

Williams posted 82 combined digs over 11 sets this past weekend at the Dartmouth, with 20 against Hartford, 20 against Hofstra, and the 42 against the hosts, averaging 7.45 per set. She also added 10 assists.

The previous record for digs in a match was Maria Rodenberg's 38 at CCSU in 2013. Earlier this season, Williams had broken the four-set digs record with 33 at Georgia State. Combined with her effort, the team also set a new four-frame benchmark with 103 digs against Dartmouth.

Williams recently moved past Rodenberg for third all-time in career digs and is now up to 1,441, just 33 away from passing Tasha Johnston ('06) for second all-time. The Los Angeles native is averaging 6.47 digs per set this year and has 220 total, good for third and fourth, respectively, in all of Division I. For comparison, Williams broke the single-season per-set mark last year at 4.28. Already the career digs per set record-holder, entering the season at 3.90, she is up to 4.15 for her career at Fordham.

The Rams are back in action against local competition this week, playing at Manhattan, Columbia, and LIU Brooklyn on consecutive days this Wednesday through Friday. The first two matches begin at 7 p.m. with the latter beginning at 6 p.m.
