Baseball Finishes Regular Season with Win at Dayton

Dayton, Ohio – (May 18, 2019) – Fordham's Nick Labella, C.J. Vazquez, and Jason Coules each drove in two runs, while seven Fordham pitchers held Dayton to just five hits, as the Rams closed out the regular season with an 8-4 win at Woerner Field to capture the series win.
 
With the victory, Fordham ends the regular season at 34-22, 15-9 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton moves to 29-24-1, 16-8 in the league.
 
Dayton opened the scoring in the second, as Riley Tirotta reached on an error and scored on a two-run home run by Marcos Pujols to center, his third of the year.
 
Fordham tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth with a home run of their own.  Justin Bardwell reached base on a two-out error and scored on a two-run home run by Nick Labella, his fifth of the season.
 
The Rams then took a 3-2 lead in the fifth.  Jake Baker was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a ground out by Jason Coules.
 
Fordham added to the lead with two runs in the sixth, as the Rams loaded the bases with two outs.  C.J. Vazquez then delivered a two-run single to left for a 5-2 lead.

The runs continued in the seventh inning for Fordham.  Jake MacKenzie led off with a walk and stole second.  After advancing to third on an error, MacKenzie scored on an RBI-single by Alvin Melendez, making it a 6-2 lead.
 
After Dayton cut the lead back to three in the bottom of the seventh, Fordham answered with two in the eighth for an 8-3 edge.  Billy Godrick led off the inning with a double through the left side and two outs later scored on a double to center by Coules.  Coules then stole third and scored on a throwing error.
 
The Flyers picked up a run in eighth, and would get two on in the ninth to get the tying run on deck with two outs.  Kyle Martin would come in from the Fordham bullpen and strike out Jeff Steuck to register his ninth save of the season, setting the career record at Rose Hill with 20.
 
In addition to Martin, Justin Bardwell also had a milestone, collecting his 55th career double, tying Greg Smith for the Fordham career mark.
 
Gabe Karslo (3-0) recorded the win for Fordham, tossing two scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout.  At the plate, Vazquez was 2-for-5 with two RBI, while MacKenzie and Melendez each had two hits and two stolen bases.  Godrick finished 2-for-4 with a double and two run scored with Coules and Labella each driving in two runs.
