Dayton, Ohio – (May 16, 2019) – The Dayton Flyers hit four home runs and took advantage of five Fordham errors, as the Flyers defeated the Rams, 17-4, at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 32-22 on the year, 13-9 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improved to 29-22-1 overall, 16-6 in the league.
The game was scoreless into the third inning, when Dayton took advantage of four Fordham errors and three walks, leading to a 9-0 advantage. The Flyers sent 13 batters to the plate, with the biggest hits in the rally being a three-run home run by Alex Brickman and an RBI-triple by Connor Wilson.
The Flyers added another run in the fourth for a 10-0 lead, before Fordham got on the board in the fifth.
Jason Coules led off the inning with a triple, and one out later, scored on a ground out by
Billy Godrick.
The Rams cut into the deficit with two runs in the sixth, making it a 10-3 ball game.
C.J. Vazquez led off with a bunt single and moved to third on a double by
Alvin Melendez.
Jake MacKenzie then plated Vazquez with a sacrifice fly, while Melendez scored on a wild pitch.
Dayton answered with another big inning in the bottom of the frame, hitting three home runs and extending the lead to 17-3.
Fordham's final run came in the ninth inning.
Colton Snelling had a two-out double to center and scored on a single by
Jake Baker.
Dayton starter Hunter Wolfe improved to 9-4 on the year, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Fordham starter
Matt Mikulski fell to 6-6, giving up seven runs in only 2.1 innings of work.
At the plate, Coules was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and a run scored, while Baker was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
Game two of the series is set for 1:00 PM on Friday.
