Richmond, Va. – (April 12, 2019) – After wading through some early inning rain, VCU came away with a 3-0 win over the Fordham Rams in Atlantic 10 baseball action on Friday at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 21-14 on the year, 6-4 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU improved to 26-8 on the year, 9-1 in the league.
Despite the rain, the game got underway with VCU taking a 1-0 in the first inning. Hogan Brown led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a walk to Zac Ching. After a pair of outs, Liam Hibbits singled to left to score Brown.
VCU added to the lead in the sixth, getting a two-run double from Alex Taylor, scoring Paul Witt and Hibbits, who were both hit by a pitch.
That was all the offense VCU needed, as Justin Sorokowski and Benjamin Dum combined for a two-hit shutout, combining for ten strikeouts. Only
Jake MacKenzie and
Nick Labella recorded hits for Fordham with MacKenzie adding a pair of stolen bases.
Matt Mikulski (4-4) was the hard luck loser in the game for Fordham, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Mike Cowell finished with an inning of scoreless relief for the Rams.
Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 2:00 PM.
