Princess Anne, Md. – (March 2, 2019) – The Fordham baseball team split its doubleheader with the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks on Saturday afternoon at Perdue Stadium in Princess Anne, Maryland. The Rams dropped game one, 6-4 in seven innings, while rebounding to win game two, 4-1 in seven innings.
With the split, Fordham is now 4-6 on the year, while Maryland Eastern Shore went to 2-9.
In game one, Fordham started out with a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Jake MacKenzie led off with a single, stole second and third base, and then scored on an infield single by
Justin Bardwell.
Maryland Eastern Shore responded with five unanswered runs, which included four in the second inning, to grab a 5-1 lead. The second inning rally was highlighted by a two-run double by Blake Coleman and a two-run single by Marcus Brown.
Fordham scratched a run across in the third, making it a 5-2 game.
Jake Guercio led off with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a single by
Jake Baker, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bardwell.
After the Hawks went back up by four with a single run in the fourth inning, Fordham closed the gap to two at 6-4 in the top of the sixth inning. The Rams loaded the bases on two singles and a hit by pitch with one out, scoring a run on a passed ball and a ground out by
Justin Machado.
Fordham would get the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but could not get by UMES closer Cory Poulsen, falling by a 6-4 count.
Matt Mikulski (0-2) took the loss for Fordham, allowing four earned runs on four hits over 1.2 innings of work.
Mike Cowell gave up one run on three hits in two innings of relief, while
Marc Bisogno posted 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. At the plate, Fordham combined for seven hits, led by Bardwell going 1-for-2 with two RBI, while MacKenzie was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

In game two, Fordham again took the initial lead in the first inning. Bardwell connected on a two-out double to center, and then stole third with the throw going into left field, allowing Bardwell to score.
The Rams added to the lead in the third, scoring twice to make it, 3-0. Machado led off with a single and moved to third on a ground out and a wild pitch. MacKenzie then plated Machado with a single to right. MacKenzie kept the rally going with a stolen base and moved to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Alvin Melendez.
After the Hawks scored a run on a double by Coleman, Fordham answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning, making it, 4-1.
Matt Tarabek doubled down the left field line to start the fourth and then scored after a pair of ground outs.
From there, Fordham's pitching duo of
Joseph Quintal and
Kyle Martin shut the door on the Hawks. Quintal (1-0) earned the win, allowing just one run over six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts, while
Kyle Martin picked up his second save with a clean seventh inning. At the plate,
Colton Snelling was 2-for-3, while Bardwell and Tarabek were both 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
The same two teams will conclude their series on Sunday. Due to potential weather, the game has been moved to a 10:30 AM start from its original noon start.
