Fordham Wraps Up Preseason with Close Road Loss

Stony Brook, N.Y. – The Fordham softball team concluded the pre-conference portion of its 2019 campaign on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-1 loss at Stony Brook. With the loss, the Rams enter league play with a 7-16 overall record, while the Seawolves improve to 6-7.

The Rams went ahead on a Jordy Storm opposite-field solo home run in the fourth inning after four strong frames from Gianna Ranieri but the Seawolves tied things up on a sac fly in the fifth before taking the lead for good an inning later on an error and a two-run home run.

Ranieri got through her first four innings with just two singles allowed to Jourdin Hering. The sophomore was able to limit the hosts to one run in the fifth despite facing two runners in scoring position and no outs. A shallow pop fly to center didn't advance the runners but a second flyout, deep to right, scored the tying run from third. Maria Trivelpiece helped Ranieri get out of the jam with a sliding catch in foul territory in right.

Things unraveled in the sixth, though, following Hering's third single of the game, which preceded her scoring following two errors in play on a sac bunt attempt. Stony Brook's pitcher, Melissa Rahrich, followed with a two-run shot to right to cap the scoring. The Seawolves threatened again by loading the bases but freshman Makenzie McGrath was able to escape the jam by inducing a lineout double play to Sarah Taffet, who doubled up the runner at first.

Storm went 2-for-3 with her home run and a single, while Trivelpiece tallied the team's other hit, a single in the fourth, plus a stolen base. Storm's home run was her third of the year, all coming in the last four days.

The Rams begin A-10 play this weekend at George Washington. Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's series finale will begin at 1 p.m.
