Gallery: (3/13/2019) Men's Basketball vs. Richmond
Brooklyn, N.Y. – In a season that started way back in August in Europe, the Fordham men's basketball season came down to a single bucket today. Unfortunately that basket was scored by Richmond's Nathan Cayo with 0.2 seconds left in the game as the Rams fell to the Spiders, 52-50, in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship at the Barclays Center on Wednesday.
With the loss, Fordham closes out the season at 12-20 while Richmond improves to 13-19.
Junior guard
Antwon Portley scored a game-high 17 points for the Rams while freshman guard
Nick Honor added 13 point and three steals and freshman guard
Jalen Cobb finished with eleven points.
The trailed by two, 50-48, following a pair of Richmond free throws with ten seconds left but Portley was fouled at the other end of the floor with four seconds left and hit both free throws to knot the game at 50.
The Spiders inbounded the ball and Jacob Gilyard drove into the lane before dishing off to Cayo who laid it in just before the buzzer.
The Rams trailed by as many as eight in the first half before Richmond took a five-point lead at the half, 23-18.
The Fordham offense got on track in the second half, opening the half with a 10-3 run to take a 28-26 lead on an Honor layup 3:32 into the half.
The Rams led by two again later in the game, 38-36, on a Portley three but the Spiders responded with a 9-1 spurt to take a 45-39 with 3:16 remaining.
