Amherst, Mass. – (November 3, 2019) – Behind a second half surge that saw three goals in just over five minutes, the Massachusetts Minutewomen defeated the Fordham Rams, 4-0, in the Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship quarterfinal match, held at Rudd Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.
The first half went scoreless as the Rams held tough against the Minutewomen offensive attack. Fordham goalkeeper
Kelly LaMorte came up large with four first half saves, three of which were quality chances for UMass.
In the 18
th minute, LaMorte stopped Jenny Hipp, where the ball popped up and LaMorte was able to grab before any rebound chance. Later in the 29
th minute, Lauren Bonavita was set loose on a breakaway, but LaMorte stoned her with a right leg save. She then stopped Bonavita again in the 39
th minute from in tight, keeping the game at 0-0.
UMass broke through in the second half, notching three goals in 5:30, all off short corner kicks by Hipp and Ansley Frazier. Bonavita scored on a half volley shot in the 51
st minute, with Ava Jouvenel netting a goal on a low shot that snuck through a couple of legs. Then Sini Laaksonen connected on a one-timer from the top of the six-yard box into the top right corner of the goal.
The Minutewomen added a final goal in the 84
th minute by Rebeca Frisk on a breakaway.
In net, LaMorte finished with five saves for the Rams, while offensively, the Rams totaled eight shots in the game from eight different players. Peyton Ryan ended up with one save for UMass in the shutout, as she stopped a shot from
Hope Baisley in the 65
th minute.
