Lewisburg, Pa. – (November 23, 2019) – Behind a 15-save performance by goalkeeper Matt Taylor, the George Washington Colonials denied the Fordham Rams a chance at the MAWPC Championship with a 9-5 win in the semifinals on Saturday at Bucknell University.
The two teams exchanged goals to start the game with the Colonials getting the final tally of the first quarter to take a 3-2 lead.
George Washington scored with 2:45 left in the second quarter to go up by two, but a late extra-man goal by Fordham's
George Maltby in the final seconds made it a 4-3 contest by halftime.
The third quarter was the turning point of the game, as Taylor made five of his 15 saves in the period, keeping Fordham off the scoresheet for the period. While Taylor kept the Rams at bay, the Colonials extended the lead to three, 6-3
The Rams had opportunities to get back in the game in the fourth quarter, getting a two-man advantage as well as a regular man-up opportunity, but could not convert on either. The teams then traded goals to make it 7-4, but George Washington sealed the game with two more markers for the 9-5 win.
For Fordham, it was a bittersweet night for
Jake Miller-Tolt, who finished with two goals, one assist, and four steals on the night. His two goals brought his season total to 113 for the year, breaking Ned Kelly's single season mark of 112 goals, set in 1971.
Aside from Miller-Tolt,
Dimitris Koukias had a goal and an assist with Maltby and
Yuki Saito having the other goals. In net,
Bailey O'Mara ended the match with nine saves, a steal, and an assist.
The loss puts Fordham in the third place match at the MAWPC Championship against Navy at 12:00 PM.
