Men’s Soccer Continues Road Swing This Week

Rams Take on Seton Hall and Massachusetts To Conclude Road Trip

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 7, 2019) – After a pair of tough losses to open a four-match road swing, the Fordham men's soccer team will look to change their luck with two more road contests this week.  Fordham starts the week at Seton Hall on Tuesday night, while playing at Massachusetts on Saturday night.
 
The Rams (3-7-1, 2-1 A-10) head to Seton Hall (4-4-0) after a pair of losses to Stony Brook and Rhode Island last week.  The Pirates enter Tuesday's contest having won its last three games, the last against Creighton by a 1-0 decision.  On Saturday, the Rams get back into conference action against the Minutemen, who have dropped five consecutive matches.  Massachusetts (4-6-0, 0-2 A10) will meet Davidson on Wednesday night for a league contest before facing the Rams on the weekend.

SERIES HISTORY: On Tuesday, it will be 31st meeting between Fordham and Seton Hall, which dates back to 1954.  The Pirates at 16-12-2 against the Rams with the last game taking place in 1992.  The two teams were scheduled to play last season, but the game was canceled due to field conditions.  Fordham's last win over the Pirates came in 1985.
 
On Saturday, it will be the 25th all-time match between the Rams and Minutemen with Massachusetts holding a 16-8 record against Fordham.  Last year, the Minutemen took a 1-0 decision at Fordham, while in 2017, the Rams defeated Massachusetts, 3-2, at Amherst, when the Minutemen were ranked 25th in the country.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Rhode Island's Edvin Akselsen netted a goal and two assists, while Filippo Tamburini added a goal and an assist, as URI topped the Fordham Rams, 3-1, in men's soccer action on Saturday night.

Fordham got off to a great start, scoring right away in the fourth minute.  Savvas Christoforou ripped a shot off the crossbar, which Johannes Pieles was able to head in the rebound for his first goal of the season.
 
Just over nine minutes later, Rhode Island evened the game at one, as Filippo Tamburini netted his fifth goal of the season, as the ball was touched past Fordham goalkeeper Konstantin Weis, while sliding through the box.   Later in the first half, URI grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute, when Edvin Akselsen took a low shot to the back corner.
 
Rhode Island then increased their lead in the 75th minute to 3-1, as Stavros Zarokostas finished off a hard cross by Akselsen for his third of the season.   Fordham tried to cut into the deficit, as the Rams were awarded a penalty kick on the 89th minute, but Joergen Oland was stopped by Stefan Schmidt to secure the win.
 
Schmidt ended up with nine saves for Rhode Island, while Weis had seven stops for the Rams.
 
WHO'S NEXT: Following this week's games, the Rams are back at home on Saturday, October 19th, for an Atlantic 10 match against the Saint Joseph's Hawks, beginning at 7:00 PM.
