Men’s Soccer Falls at Columbia

Late Goal in the 84th Minute Gives Lions the Win

New York, N.Y. – (October 29, 2019) – Columbia's Matthew Swain scored the lone goal of the contest in the 84th minute, as the Lions took home a 1-0 win over the Fordham Rams in men's soccer action on Tuesday night.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-10-2, while Columbia improved to 4-5-4.

Played in wet, rainy conditions, Fordham had a prime scoring chance right out of the gates in the sixth minute.  Jack Murphy took a corner kick from the near side.  The ball found its way to Tomer Zloczower on the left side of the box for a rip shot that a Columbia defender kept from crossing the goal line to keep the game scoreless.

Zloczower was foiled again in the 78th minute, as he pulled the goalkeeper away from his net and got the ball in toward goal but the ball was once again stopped by a Columbia defender.

The lone goal of the game came late in the contest as a ball was played into the box.  Near the endline, Danny Laranetto passed back to Beto Carrillo near the top of the 18-yard box, who crossed the ball the left side for Matthew Swain.  Swain's shot glanced off Fordham's Jack Sluys and into the left side of the net for his first of the season.

In net, Konstantin Weis had four saves for Fordham to just one for Michael Collodi.

The Fordham men's soccer team now looks forward to their regular season finale at Saint Louis on November 2nd, at 8:00 PM Eastern.  The Rams can finish anywhere from third to fifth in the conference standings for the Championship.  A win and some help could give Fordham a home quarterfinal match next week.
