Bronx, N.Y. – In front of 2,538 screaming fans and local schoolchildren for the team's annual Field Trip Day event and behind a near-triple-double from
Bre Cavanaugh and 14 points apiece by seniors
Mary Goulding and
Lauren Holden, the Fordham women's basketball team notched its sixth consecutive win on Wednesday, 60-48, never trailing after the opening five minutes. With the win, the Rams improve to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Spiders fall to 3-12 and 0-2, respectively.
Â
"We grinded out a great team win," Head coach
Stephanie Gaitley said, "17 assists on 25 baskets and solid defense equals a quality win!" Â
Â
Cavanaugh set a new career-high seven assists to go with 20 points and 12 rebounds, the latter also matching her personal-best mark, while Goulding and Holden combined for 28 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field. Holden sank four three-pointers for a second consecutive game and Goulding chipped in seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Â
Richmond's Alex Parson scored six points in the opening minute to give the visitors a quick 6-3 lead and held its final lead of the game, 10-9, following an Aniyah Carpenter jumper, but
Kaitlyn Downey's three on the next possession midway through the first proved to be the game winner for Fordham, who led, 17-14, after the opening 10 minutes.
Â
The Spiders worked to chipped away at a nine-point deficit after the Rams started the second quarter with six unanswered points, getting within three, 23-20, with a little under five minutes to go, but Fordham dominated the rest of the way, closing the period with an 11-5 run, with all scoring by Cavanaugh and
Megan Jonassen.
Â
Fordham didn't slow down in the third quarter, instead beginning the half with a 20-6 win in the frame, leading by 23, 54-31, at the end of the period. All the scoring came from Cavanaugh, Goulding, and Holden, led by Goulding's 10 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting, three boards, two assists, and two steals. Holden also sank both of her long-range attempts, while Cavanaugh assisted on three of the baskets. Richmond closed the game out with a 17-6 fourth quarter as the Rams emptied their bench.
Â
Wednesday was Cavanaugh's seventh 20-point effort of the season and second 20-point double-double. She's now got five double-doubles on the season. Goulding's seven field goals are one short of her career-high set earlier this season against Charlotte and it's the eighth game of her season with three or more assists.
Kendell Heremaia posted another all-around line with five points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal across 25 minutes, and Jonassen matched her season-high with six rebounds, five of which came on the offensive glass, to go with four points off the bench.Â
Â
The Rams outshot the Spiders, 39.7% to 37.5%, and had 54 points on 47.8% shooting through the first three periods. Fordham notched 40 rebounds for a fifth time this season, while it's +16 rebounding margin is second-highest on the year. Fordham also made it three straight contests with exactly 10 turnovers, four of which came in the fourth quarter, compared to 17 team assists, tied for second-most this season.
Â
Fordham heads back out on the road for another nationally-televised contest on Sunday afternoon, traveling to Saint Louis for a 4 p.m. tip-off. CBS Sports Network will carry the broadcast.
