Chicago, Ill. – (January 11, 2019) – The culmination of a fantastic four-year career at Rose Hill came to a fruition on Friday afternoon, as Fordham men's soccer forward
Janos Loebe (Kierspe, Germany) was selected with the 22
nd selection of the first round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls.
Loebe becomes the third Fordham player drafted by the Red Bulls franchise, joining Ryan Meara, who was a second round selection in 2012, and John Wolyniec, who was a first round selection (7
th overall) by the then-NY/NJ MetroStars in 1999.
"It was an amazing feeling to hear my name called in the first round," said Loebe. "I couldn't be more excited to play for this great team. I'm really looking forward to working with these great people and play in front of great fans. Can't wait to get started."
Loebe had a strong showing at the MLS Combine over the last two weeks, netting a goal in one of the combine scrimmages.
Loebe's selection caps an incredible career at Fordham. This season, he became just the third Atlantic 10 player to win the Offensive Player of the Year/Player of the Year Award twice and was only the second player to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors all four years of his career. He also earned First Team All-Region honors for the second straight season.
A two-time Offensive Player of the Week, Loebe led the Atlantic 10 with 11 assists during the regular season, while his 25 points tied for the league lead with George Washington's Oscar Haynes Brown and Saint Joseph's Leon Maric. His seven goals tied for ninth in the league, with his three game-winning goals, tying for sixth. Nationally, he ranked fourth in total assists as well as second in assists per game, while being 34
th in total points and 23rd in points per game.
Loebe will go down as one of the top offensive players in program history, ranking second at Fordham in career assists (31), fourth in career points (83), tied for sixth in goals (26), fourth in games played (79) and third in games started (78).
