Annapolis, Md. – (September 2, 2018) – The Fordham water polo team concluded its opening weekend of action on Sunday at the Navy Labor Day Open, splitting a pair of matches. The Rams defeated Iona, 10-6, in the opening match of the day, followed by a tough one-goal loss to Navy in the afternoon session.
With the split, Fordham is 2-2 on the year.
In the opening game of the day, Fordham got 10 saves from
Patrick Coffey and a hat trick from Jake-Miller Tolt to give the Rams a 10-6 win over the Iona Gaels.
The Rams led the entire game, opening with a 5-2 edge after the first quarter on a pair of goals from Philip Wang, as well as markers by Miller-Tolt,
Diego Delgado, and
Ian Watson.

Fordham increased the lead to 7-3 in the second quarter with goals from
George Maltby and Sam Varshisky.
The Rams would go on to win by that four-goal margin, 10-6, as Miller-Tolt finished with three goals, an assist and two steals, while Wang had two goals and two assists. Delgado also had a big game with a goal and five assists.
Patrick Coffey ended with 10 stops in the game, while adding an assist and two steals.
In game two, Navy outlasted Fordham 8-7 in the final match of the Open.
After Navy opened with a 2-0 lead, Fordham netted three straight goals by
Cole Donnelly, Miller-Tolt, and Wang to finish the first quarter up 3-2.
The Midshipmen responded with three goals in the second, grabbing a 5-3 lead.
Navy extended the lead to 6-3 before goals from Miller-Tolt and
Ian Watson closed the gap back to 6-5. However, an even strength goal and a penalty shot goal put Navy back on top by three, 8-5, heading into the final frame.
Wang and Delgado scored near the midway point of the fourth quarter, once again closing the Fordham deficit to one goal at 8-7. In the waning seconds, Navy was called for a penalty with two seconds left, giving the Rams a last chance to tie the game, but Wang's penalty shot hit the right post and stayed out, giving Navy the win.
Miller-Tolt and Wang each had two goals to lead the offense with Wang, and
Joseph Agabs each having three steals in the match. Coffey ended up seven saves to go with a team-best four steals.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Sunday, September 9
th, when the Rams travel to Princeton for a pair of matches. The Rams face Santa Clara at 11:15 AM and Harvard at 4:15 PM.
