Softball Wraps Up Mary Nutter Classic with Loss to RV/RV Arkansas

Rams Sixth-Inning Rally Falls Short in Tight 4-2 Defeat

Box Score (pdf)

Palm Springs, Calif. – The Fordham softball team wrapped up its stay at the 2018 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a tight 4-2 loss to RV/RV Arkansas on Monday morning. With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-5 on the young season.

"I'm proud of the way that this team worked and got better as the weekend went on. An opportunity to play some of the top teams in the country and world is why we come here," Head coach Bridget Orchard said, "Our weaknesses are exposed playing at this high level but we know what to work on heading into next weekend. This weekend was tough mentally and physically but I feel going through this early and gaining the experience will make this team tougher. This was our first time outside, seeing fly balls, ground balls, and live pitching, but everyone understands the big picture. We will be better as play more."

The Razorbacks played one run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings, the latter, a RBI single, proving to be the difference at game's end. Fordham rallied in the sixth, though, to make it a one-run game but Arkansas padded its lead with its second solo home run of the game in the bottom half of the frame.

Paige Rauch started the sixth inning rally with a one-out walk, which preceded singles from Skylar Johnston and Madi Shaw, the latter plating Rauch from second. Molly Roark was able to reach on an error and Johnston came around to score on Rachel Hubertus' single. However, Lauren Quense and Maria Trivelpiece went down in order to end the threat. The Rams did put two on with two outs in the seventh, Rauch recording her second walk and Johnston again singling but Shaw's grounder found the shortstop to end the contest.

Quense went the distance for the first time this year, the 33rd of her career, tying Courtney Collins ('02) for eighth-most in program history, in her 90th career start, which ties Michele Daubman ('15) for third-most. The grad student allowed four runs, three earned, with a pair of walks and strikeouts over her six innings.

The Rams next travel to Tampa for the USF Tournament and will kick things off against Bryant on Friday at 9:15 a.m. before playing the hosts at 2 p.m.
