Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team's penultimate match of the 2018 season ended in a five-set loss to the visiting George Washington Colonials on Friday afternoon. The Rams rallied to win sets two and three after falling in the first but the visitors used a rally of their own to snatch the victory. With the loss, Fordham falls to 9-17 overall and 2-11 in Atlantic 10 play, while George Washington improves to 10-15 and 4-9, respectively.
"This was a hard-fought match which ultimately came down to what we've been trying to reinforce all year - making sure we're running a balanced offense and minimizing our errors," Head coach
Ian Choi said, "We can't give away more than half the set in errors in the fifth. This was still a good learning moment for us, though, and we're looking forward to bouncing back against George Mason tomorrow."
Kaitlin Morley enjoyed a career evening in front of a solid crowd inside the Rose Hill Gym, going off for a personal-best 28 kills on 79 attacks (.282) with 20 digs and three blocks to lead the attack. Freshman Bella Ureña came off the bench and set a new personal mark, as well, with 13 kills.
The defense notched 93 total digs in the match, led by
Morgan Williams' 23 and Morley's 20.
McKenna Lahr, with 15,
Makaela Tanaka, with 13, and
Alena Cashdan, with 10, all finished with double-digit digs, as well. Senior
Olivia LaPorta matched her season-high of six blocks, two solo, with
Elise Benjamin adding two total blocks, one solo, as well. Tanaka ran the offense with 47 assists for a double-double on the day.
The Rams final match of the year comes tomorrow against George Mason at 3 p.m. That match will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans are encouraged to come early to support two prematch ceremonies:
