Fordham Edged in Atlantic 10 Quarterfinal

Kingston, R.I. – (November 4, 2018) – Rhode Island's Edvin Akselsen assisted on a pair of goals, while Roger Penske made seven saves, as URI defeated the Fordham Rams, 2-0, in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship quarterfinal, held at the URI Soccer Complex in Kingston, R.I.

With the loss, Fordham finishes its season at 8-5-4, while Rhode Island improved to 13-4-0 and advance to the conference semifinals, which will be held at Hermann Stadium in St. Louis, Mo.

Rhode Island scored the opening goal of the contest in the 27th minute, as Akselsen found Stavros Zarokostas on the run.  Fordham goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu came out of goal to challenge, but Zarokostas tucked a shot past Nuhu into the lower right corner for his eighth goal of the season.

URI would eventually make it 2-0 in the 72nd minute on a set piece.  Following a foul call against Fordham, Akselsen payed a ball into the box to Tyler Dickson for a header into the left side of the net for his fourth of the year.

Fordham pressed the attack on a number of occasions, outshooting Rhode Island, 17-9, in the game, but could not get a ball by Penske as he recorded his fifth shutout.

For Fordham, Nuhu finished with four saves in his final game as a Ram, as he also tied the school record for most appearances in goal at 74 with Ryan Meara.
