Claremont, Calif. – (October 6, 2018) – The Fordham water polo team had a rough finish to their west coast trip to California on Saturday, dropping a pair of one-goal contests on the final day of the Gary Troyer Tournament.
In match one, Fordham fell to Cal Lutheran by a score of 11-10, despite a late comeback attempt. Trailing 11-6 with about four minutes to play, the Rams scored four times in the final minutes of the fourth quarter to pull within one. However Fordham was unable to get a possession in the final 26 seconds to try and get the tying goal.
For Fordham,
Jake Miller-Tolt,
George Maltby, and
Ian Watson each had two goals, while
Phillip Wang and
Magnus Sims each had a goal and two assists.
Dimitris Koukias and
Sam Wheeler closed out the scoring with a goal apiece. In net,
Bailey O'Mara had five saves over two quarters with
Patrick Coffey having three stops.
In match two, the Rams almost pulls off their first upset of 2018, but ended up falling in overtime to #14 Cal Baptist by a score of 10-9.
Trailing 7-6 late in the fourth, Sims scored with 2:15 left, as Fordham knotted the score. Both teams had chances to go ahead, but none materialized into the deciding goal, forcing overtime.
In the first three minutes, Sims scored to put Fordham on top 8-7, but the deesaw affair went back and forth with Cal Baptist taking an 11-10 lead with 14 seconds left. On the final Fordham possession, the Rams were able to draw an exclusion, but only one second remained on the clock, which was not enough time for Fordham, as the team fell to 6-12 on the year.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Saturday, October 13
th, when the Rams play at La Salle, beginning at 2:00 PM.
