Philadelphia, Pa. – (October 6, 2018) – Saint Joseph's Leon Maric scored in the 98
th minute to a break the tie in the overtime, as the Hawks topped the #21 Fordham Rams, 3-2, at Sean Sweeney Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-2-3 overall, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's improved to 7-3-2 on the year, 1-0-1 in the league.
Fordham opened the scoring in the 37
th minute, as
Janos Loebe got a cross in from the left side which was headed home by
Jack Sluys for his second goal of the season.
The Hawks quickly knotted the game at one in the 41
st minute on a strange play from the midfield. Mike Fornaro put a long ball into the box, bounced, and avoided multiple players in the box and rolled into the goal to knot the game at one.
Saint Joseph's then took a 2-1 lead in the second half in the 51
st minute. Daniel Morales chested the ball wide to Alvin Dahn, who played the ball into the box. The cross was knocked into the net by Derek MacKinnon for his third goal of the year.
Fordham then found the equalizer in the 79
th minute as a missed clearance by the Hawks came right to
Johannes Pieles, who buried a shot inside the left post for his second goal of the year.
The game would stay tied thanks to multiple outstanding defensive plays by both teams and both goalkeepers.
However, the Hawks found the game-winner in the 98
th minute in the first overtime period, as a long ball forward by Saint Joseph's went off a Fordham defender to Leon Maric. Maric waited out Fordham goalkeeper
Rashid Nuhu and two defenders for the game-winning marker, his sixth of the season.
In net, Nuhu finished with seven saves, while Joseph Boehm had three stops for the Hawks.
The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Wednesday, October 10
th, when the Rams travel to Duquesne for a 7:00 PM match.
