Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham volleyball team suffered a four-set loss against visiting Davidson on Friday afternoon during the team's annual Dig Pink and Field Trip Day events. With the loss, the Rams fall to 9-12 overall on the season and 2-6 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Wildcats improve to 11-8 and 4-4, respectively.
"Kids Day is always a unique and exciting environment for our student athletes," Head coach
Ian Choi said, "I'm always appreciative to the community for coming out to support us. The match was definitely a test for us offensively. I'm happy about getting back to running a faster offense but now we have to sustain our offensive diversity to remain efficient throughout a four or five set match. We'll look to continue to layer our goals with a competitive match-up with VCU on Sunday."
After spending the first two weekends of October on the road, the Rams returned to the Bronx to play their annual Dig Pink match in front of nearly 2,000 local schoolchildren. For the third time in the last four matches, Fordham took the opening set; the Rams tallied 15 kills to just three errors on 37 attacks, good for a .324 team hit percentage, but combined for 20 errors over the next three frames for their seventh-highest total of the year. The Wildcats had one fewer error but 12 more kills.
Kaitlin Morley led the way with 13 kills but missed out on what would've been her eighth double-double in her last nine matches. The junior added five digs, two blocks, and an ace. The trio of
Elise Benjamin,
McKenna Lahr, and
Joey Landeros all contributed seven kills apiece and
Olivia LaPorta added six.
Makaela Tanaka ran the offense with a match-high 37 assists and added 12 digs, plus two blocks and an ace, for her third double-double.
Defensively,
Morgan Williams led the way with 18 digs, while Benjamin notched six more blocks. The junior has at least six blocks in eight matches and four straight. Landeros and LaPorta each chipped in three blocks.
Fordham hosts defending A-10 champion VCU on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. before heading back out on the road for its final three road contests of the regular season.
