St. Louis, Mo. – (October 11, 2018) – For the second straight week, the Fordham women's soccer team was in a first place battle for the top spot in the Atlantic 10 standings in their Thursday night match. Unfortunately, despite an excellent performance by junior goalkeeper
Kelly LaMorte, the Rams fell to the Saint Louis Billikens on a late goal, 1-0, at Hermann Stadium.
With the loss, Fordham had its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped, falling to 8-6-1 overall, 5-1-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis improved to 12-3-1 on the year, 7-0-0 in the league.
The first half saw scoring chances for both sides, but neither LaMorte nor Saint Louis goalkeeper Olivia Silverman faltered in net. LaMorte had four first half saves compared to three by Silverman.
The biggest stop though came from LaMorte, as Saint Louis was awarded a penalty kick in the 42
nd minute. Evie La Velle stepped to the penalty spot and shot to the right, where LaMorte was waiting for it and knocked the ball away. The rebound was loose, but the Fordham defense was able to clear the ball and finish out the half scoreless.
LaMorte continued to stifle the Billikens in the second half, adding three more saves in the second half, which included a diving stop in the 87
th minute to foil Maddie Pokorny for the fourth time in the game.
However on the next Saint Louis attack, Hannah Friedrich took a pass from Olivia Petit, dribbled in and scored to the far post in the 88
th minute for her eighth goal of the season.
Fordham was unable to find the equalizer in the final two-and a half minutes, as LaMorte finished the match with a season-high seven saves, just one off her career-high.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 14
th, as the Rams host La Salle at 1:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field. It will be Senior Day for the Rams, as the team honors its six seniors prior to the game.
