Annapolis, Md. – The Fordham water polo team opened its 2017 season on Saturday, competing at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland. The Rams had a good day one picking up victories over La Salle and Gannon, while falling to 11
th-ranked Princeton.
In the opening game of the day, Fordham had three players record hat tricks, while
Patrick Coffey made a career-high 13 saves, as the Rams topped the La Salle Explorers, 14-4.
Fordham jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter, courtesy of three goals by
Jake Miller-Tolt and one by
Joseph Agabs.
After extending the lead to 6-1 at the half, the Rams netted six tallies in the third quarter to go up by a 12-3 count, and eventually won by a 14-4 score.
For Fordham, Miller-Tolt, Agabs, and
Massimiliano Mirarchi each scored three times with Miller-Tolt adding three assists and three steals.
Cameron Shewchuck had a goal, an assist, and five steals with
Magnus Sims,
August Weyandt,
Samuel Varshisky, and
George Maltby recording one goal apiece. In net,
Patrick Coffey recorded a career-high 13 saves to go with a steal.
In match two, Fordham faced its sternest test on day one, taking on the 11
th-ranked Princeton Tigers, falling by a score of 12-7.

Fordham opened the scoring with a goal by Miller-Tolt, but the Tigers scored five of the next six markers to take a 5-2 lead after the first quarter.
Each team scored twice in the second quarter putting the score at 7-4. Miller-Tolt got Fordham within two, 7-5, after netting the opening goal of the third quarter, but the Tigers scored the next three goals to end the third up 10-5. Both squads tallied twice in the fourth quarter for the final score of 12-7.
For Fordham, Mirarchi registered four goals and two steals with Miller-Tolt having three goals and three steals.
Alex Jahns made seven saves in goal for his first action of the year.
The final match-up of day one of the Navy Invitational saw Fordham defeat Gannon by a score of 11-7.
With a 4-3 lead after two quarters, the Rams exploded for six goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth to earn the 11-7 win.
For the Rams, Mirarchi scored a game-high six goals to go with an assist, while
Phillip Wang netted three goals, an assist, and two steals.
Ethan Vandeventer had a goal and an assist with
Diego Delgado registering the final goal for Fordham. In net, Jahns made six saves.
The Fordham water polo team will conclude action at the Navy Invitational on Sunday, September 3
rd, with a match-up against Washington & Jefferson at 9:30 AM.
