Princeton, N.J. – The Fordham water polo team wrapped up action at the Princeton Invitational on Sunday with a pair of matches.
It was an early start for game one as the Rams faced 14
th-ranked Brown at 7:30 AM. Fordham was ready for the early wake-up call, but their upset bid was foiled by the Bears in a 6-5 decision.
Fordham opened with a 1-0 lead in the first quarter, as
Ian Watson scored the only goal of the period at the 4:55 mark.
After exchanging goals to start the second, Fordham got back-to-back goals from Miller-Tolt and
Magnus Sims to go up by a 4-1 count.
Brown closed the gap to 4-3, scoring once to end the second quarter and once to start the third, before Miller-Tolt scored his second goal of the game with 2:35 left in the third quarter to put the Rams back up two, 5-3. The Bears scored a penalty shot goal with over a minute left in the quarter, leaving Fordham with a 5-4 lead entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Brown netted an early extra-man goal to tie the game at five, and then scored the eventual game-winning goal with 3:21 left. Fordham had multiple opportunities to get the equalizer, but
Massimiliano Mirarchi hit the post on one possession, while on the last possession his shot was stopped by the Brown goalkeeper with three seconds on the clock.
For Fordham, Miller-Tolt had two goals, two assists, and four steals, while Mirarchi had a goal and two steals.
Cole Donnelly added a pair of assists and a steal with
Alex Jahns making ten saves to go with two steals in net.
In game two, Fordham overcame an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Chapman, 15-11.
Ian Watson totaled three goals in two matches on Sunday.
After conceding the opening three goals of the game, the Rams responded with six unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead by the 4:02 mark of the second quarter. Mirarchi had three of the six goals, while
Diego Delgado,
Ethan Vandeventer, and Miller-Tolt had the other three.
Chapman closed to within one on the scoreboard on a couple of occasions, but the Rams never relinquished the lead, winning by four, 15-11.
For Fordham, Mirarchi tied a season-high with six goals to go with a pair of assists, while Delgado had three goals and three assists. Miller-Tolt and Watson each had a pair of markers with Vandeventer and
Magnus Sims. In net, Jahns had 10 saves in the win to go with three saves.
The Fordham water polo team will next be in action on Saturday, September 23
rd, when the Rams open league action at Johns Hopkins, beginning at 10:00 AM, while being at Navy for a 7:00 PM start.
