Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham women's softball team fell, 3-0, to nearby St. John's on Wednesday afternoon at Bahoshy Field in the team's home finale. With the result, the Rams fall to 39-14, while St. John's improves to 28-15 on the year.
McKenzie Murray twirled a gem for the Red Storm, limiting the Rams to just four singles with no walks allowed and six strikeouts, needing just one of the three first-inning runs to secure her eighth win of the year.
Lauren Quense got the first two outs in the opening frame but allowed a single and a walk before Christina Melendez reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Kaitlin Mattera then took a 1-1 offering and dropped it into the right center field gap, scoring all three of her teammates. Quense did not allow another baserunner over her final two innings and neither did
Madison Aughinbaugh in relief, tossing two perfect frames with two strikeouts before giving way to
Taylor Stocks, who allowed just one walk in two otherwise clean innings.
Fordham got hits from
Sydney Canessa,
Jessica Hughes, Aughinbaugh, and
Chelsea Skrepenak, and got to see the long-awaited return of senior
Amy Van Hoven after an injury layoff, who pinch hit in the bottom of the seventh.
Fifth in the country in walks this year, the Rams didn't draw a walk for just the third time all season. Fordham still has more walks than strikeouts on the year, though, with 226 to 221.
The Rams finish up the regular season with a critical three-game series at La Salle this weekend, with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, and series finale on Sunday. Both days will begin at noon barring weather issues.
