Fairfax, Va. – The Fordham softball team will have to wait for its 30
th win of the campaign after falling, 2-1, in the series finale at George Mason on Sunday. With the loss, the Rams fall to 29-9 (7-2 A-10), while the Patriots improve to 11-24 (5-4 A-10) overall.
Â
A low-scoring affair ended in a walk-off unearned run in the seventh, a grounder misplayed by fill-in shortstop
Lindsay Mayer to allow a runner to score from third with two outs.
Lauren Quense, who had relieved starter
Taylor Stocks in the fifth inning, had gone two hitless frames before the seventh, allowing two one-out singles and a groundout to move the pair over before Mayer's error handed the senior her fifth loss of the season.
Â
Fordham got on the board in the third with some small ball. With one out,
Ally Vergona singled to center and was moved to second on a bunt single by
Morgan Figueroa.
Jessica Hughes grounded into a fielder's choice but got Vergona to third, who then scored on
Sydney Canessa's infield single to short.
Â
Stocks was perfect through three, setting down the Patriots lineup in order the first time through. However, her lone blemish came on the next batter, leadoff hitter Jess Curbeira's solo home run to start the fourth. The freshman would allow another single in the inning, the only two hits allowed by her on the afternoon.
Â
Figueroa paced the Rams with three singles in three at bats, while Canessa finished 2-for-4 with the lone RBI. Mayer finished 0-for-3 after her terrific 5-for-7 showing in yesterday's doubleheader, still leading the team with her .500 average over the three games.
Jordana Storm was next with three hits in eight at-bats (.375), with
Skylar Johnston behind her at .333 with a team-leading two doubles.
