Baseball Shuts Down George Washington for 3-1 Victory

Serrapica Strikes Out Nine for Fourth Win of the Season, while Murphy Earns Fifth Save

Bronx, N.Y. - Saturday saw another great pitching effort from Fordham seniors Joseph Serrapica and Jimmy Murphy, the Fordham baseball team edged out the George Washington Colonials, 3-1, on Alumni Day at Houlihan Park on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Fordham improved to 25-23 on the season, 11-6 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington fell to 20-27 on the year, 9-8 in the league.  It also marked another series win for the Rams, as they have earned five series wins this season.

The game was scoreless until the third inning, where Fordham took advantage of a pair of George Washington errors.  Joseph DeVito started the inning with a walk and moved to second on a one-out single by Joseph Runco.  Ryan McNally then hit a ground ball to third that the Eli Kashi couldn't handle for an error, loading the bases for Mark Donadio.  Donadio followed with a ground ball up the middle that shortstop Kevin Mahala muffed, allowing two runs to score on the play for a 2-0 lead.

The Colonials cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Bobby Campbell, but Fordham answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame to go up, 3-1.  Ryan Mahoney reached on an infield single to second and moved up a base on a single up the middle from Jason Lundy.  DeVito connected on another single up the middle, scoring Mahoney from second base.

Joseph DeVito's RBI-single in the fourth gave Fordham a 3-1 lead.

The two-run lead held up behind a masterful performance from Fordham's senior pitching duo of Joseph Serrapica and Jimmy Murphy.  Serrapica picked up his fourth win of the season (4-4), as he scattered six hits over seven innings, allowing just one unearned run with nine strikeouts.  Murphy closed out the win with two hitless innings of relief, registering his team-leading fifth save of the season.

At the plate, DeVito was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Justin Bardwell and Lundy were both 2-for-4.

The same two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a noon contest at Houlihan Park.
