Baseball Drops Series Opener at UMass

Rams & Minutemen to Meet in Doubleheader on Saturday to Finish Series

Amherst, Mass. – UMass starting pitcher Ryan Moloney allowed just four hits and two walks over seven innings, while Hunter Carey and Ryan Lever both homered, as the Massachusetts Minutemen defeated the Fordham Rams, 8-1, at Earl Lorden Field in Amherst, Massachusetts.
 
With the loss, Fordham falls to 22-22 on the year, 8-5 in the Atlantic 10, while UMass improved to 12-19 overall, 5-8 in the league.
 
The Minutemen opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, when Ryan Lever hit a solo home run to left for his first of the season and a 1-0 lead.
 
UMass then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead to 6-0.  Hunter Carey started the frame with a solo home run to right, his second of the season.  The Minutemen then loaded the bases with one out and got a two-run single from Dylan Morris for a 4-0 lead.  UMass also picked up two more runs on a Fordham error to close out the inning.
 
Fordham cracked the scoreboard in the eighth, as the Rams loaded the bases on a walk to Joseph Runco, a single from Matthew Kozuch, and a Ryan McNally hit by pitch.  Justin Bardwell then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Runco.

The Minutemen though scored twice in the eighth to make it an 8-1 final score, as UMass starter Ryan Moloney earned his fourth win of the season, allowing just four hits and two walks over seven innings of work.
 
For Fordham, Kirk Haynes, Jr. (3-4) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits over five innings of work.  At the plate, Fordham managed just five hits in the game, with Jason Lundy and Kozuch each having two apiece.
 
The same two teams will be back at it on Saturday, as they will play a doubleheader at 1:00 PM to wrap up the series.
