Men's Basketball Upended by UTA

Rams fall despite Joseph Chartounty's double-double

Bronx, N.Y. – The UT Arlington men's basketball squad made just one more three-pointer tonight than the Fordham University team but it was an important one as Jalen Jones nailed a corner three with 41 seconds remaining to break a 60-60 tie and lead the Mavericks to a 67-63 win over the Rams in the Rose Hill Gym.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 5-2 on the year while UTA improves to 4-3. The loss snaps an 18-game home court non-conference winning streak for Fordham, dating back to 2014.

The Rams fell despite a double-double from sophomore guard Joseph Chartouny, who netted 12 points and added ten assists for his second double-double of the year. He also added a season-high six steals.

Junior guard Antwoine Anderson led all scorers for Fordham with 18 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the field, and he added a career-high six steals while junior forward Christian Sengfelder also finished in double figures with 12 points.

The Rams forced 21 UTA turnovers and recorded 14 steals, converting the 21 turnovers into 19 points.

Fordham trailed by seven, 57-50, following a Kaelon Wilson layup with 4:06 remaining when a Sengfelder basket, off a feed from Anderson, started a 10-3 run as the Rams knotted the game at 60 on an Anderson steal and layup at the 1:07 mark. Anderson and Chartouny hit three-pointers in the Fordham run.

Anderson was fouled on the layup but couldn't convert the free throw and the Mavericks took the rebound up court, working it around until they found Wilson open in the corner for the three-pointer.

Anderson was fouled with 21 seconds on the clock but hit just one of his two free throws and the Rams fouled Kevin Hervey four seconds later. Hervey hit both of his charity shots to put UTA up four, 65-61, but Anderson was able to take the ball down the lane for a lay in with ten seconds remaining to make it a two-point game, 65-63.

The Mavericks inbounded the ball to Hervey in the corner and the Rams appeared to have him trapped but he was able to get off a pass into the front court that was gathered by Jones who was fouled with under a second left. Jones hit both free throws for the 67-63 final.

UTA jumped out to a 15-8 lead 5:44 into the game when the Rams scored seven straight to tie the game at 15 on an Anderson three-pointer with 11:11 remaining.

The Mavericks managed to get the lead back to seven later in the half, 26-19, but an 8-2 Fordham spurt pulled the Rams within one, 28-27, on a Javontae Hawkins three-pointer with 3:17 on the clock and Fordham trailed by two at the break, 29-27.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday night, November 30, as they host the Sacred Heart University Pioneers in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 p.m.

Notes

The Rams attempted a school record 36 three-pointers (the previous mark was 34 set earlier this year versus NYIT).
