St. Louis, Mo. – Saint Louis' Kirsten Clemens scored on a breakaway in the 55
th minute, while Mary Niehaus had seven saves, as the Billikens topped the Fordham Rams, 1-0, in women's soccer action at Hermann Stadium on Thursday night.
With the loss, Fordham goes to 7-4-3 on the year, 2-1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis improved to 11-2-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the league.
Fordham threatened to score early in the third minute, as
Lane Cronin, who had scored in each of the last two games, ripped a shot off the crossbar and was cleared.
In the 25
th minute,
Margaret Roughley had a header shot that had to be pushed aside by Saint Louis' Mary Niehaus for a Fordham corner kick.
Brooke Salmon found
Nicole Bates for a header on the corner kick, but Niehaus was up to the task again, keeping the game scoreless through halftime.
Then in the 55
th minute, Saint Louis struck for the only goal of the game. Maddie Pokorny made a strong run through the Fordham midfield and sent a through ball to Kirsten Clemens for a breakaway. Fordham goalkeeper
Megan Fitzgerald came out to challenge, but Clemens was just able to slip a shot by the senior keeper for her fifth goal of the season.
Fordham tried to find the equalizer with the best chance coming in the 70
th minute.
Natalie Sims was able to corral the ball just inside the box, and fired a shot to the left side of goal, but Niehaus made a diving stop to knock the ball out of play.
Niehaus made seven saves in the shutout, while Fitzgerald had three stops for the Rams.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 16
th, as the Rams will host Dayton for Cancer Awareness Day at Jack Coffey Field, beginning at 1:00 PM.
