Men’s Basketball Falls to Dayton

Rams can’t overcome slow start

Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham campus seems to have recovered from Winter Storm Jonas but the Fordham men's basketball team couldn't recover from a slow start, dropping a 64-50 Atlantic 10 game to the University of Dayton today in the Rose Hill Gym.
 
With the loss, Fordham falls to 11-7 overall, 2-5 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improves to 16-3, 6-1 in the conference.

Ryan Rhoomes led the Rams with 14 points, and he added six rebounds, while Mandell Thomas (11) and Jon Severe (10) also finished in double figures.
 
The Flyers hit six of their first nine shots and forced five Fordham turnovers over the first 4:37 as Dayton jumped out to a 15-2 lead.
 
Fordham battled back, cutting the Dayton lead to seven with 13:13 left in the half, 16-9, with a 7-1 spurt, four of those from Christian Sengfelder.
 
But the Flyers outscored the Rams 15-6 over the next six minutes to takes its biggest lead of the day, 31-15, and Dayton held a 37-24 lead at the break.
 
Dayton led again by 16 with 13:47 remaining, 45-31, when a 7-1 Fordham run trimmed the Flyers' lead to eight, 46-38, following a Joseph Chartouny layup with 9:57 left.
 
Trailing by 15, 52-38, with 7:09 left, the Rams mounted one last comeback attempt, using an 11-4 run to make it a 56-49 game on a Rhoomes dunk with 2:32 on the clock but that was as close as they would get. Rhoomes had five of the eleven Fordham points on the run.
 
The Rams return to action on Wednesday, January 27, as they travel to Kingston, R.I., to face the University of Rhode Island in an Atlantic 10 contest at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network (ASN).
 


Notes
The Rams wore a special JB patch on their uniforms in memory of Johnny Bach, who passed away last Monday.
 
Rhoomes' six rebounds bring his career total to 781, good for ninth on the Fordham career rebounding list.
 
Rhoomes also had one block to bring his career total to 125, fifth all-time for the Rams.
 
Rhoomes has now scored in double figures in 17 of the 18 games in 2015-2016.
 
Thomas' eleven points bring his career scoring total to 1,324, moving him ahead of Bob Melvin (1969-1963) and Bill Langheld (1965-1968) and into 14th place on the Fordham all-time list.
 
Thomas hit three three-pointers tonight and now has 151 in his career, good for ninth on the all-time list.
 
After the hot start, Fordham held Dayton to shooting 35.9 percent (14-39) from the field.
 
The Rams committed fewer turnovers than Dayton (15-14) and fell for just the second time in ten games this year when committing fewer turnovers than their opponent.
 
Fordham was outrebounded 39-28 and are now 1-5 on the year when being outrebounded.
 
Fordham fell to 1-3 on Sundays, the only day of the week in which Fordham has a losing record.
 
The Rams lost for just the second time in 13 home games in 2015-2016.
 
Dayton has taken the past 12 meetings with Fordham.
