The Fordham Men's Water Polo team dropped its first two contests of the 2015 Bison Invitational on Saturday. The Rams were defeated by two nationally ranked programs -- #15 Navy and #17 Bucknell. With the losses, Fordham drops to 2-4 on the season.
Â
Up first was a familiar foe that the Rams battled last weekend in Annapolis, Md. to a tough 9-6 loss. It was Navy score advantages in the first and fourth quarters that ultimately proved to be the difference in the 12-8 defeat in Lewisburg; the two middle periods proved even between the two squads.
Â
Fordham had six different scorers: seniors
Andrew Gonzalez,
Landon Kern, and
Davis DeFontes provided one apiece, while the freshmen trio of
Diego Delgado (2),
Magnus Sims (2), and
Ryan Guso continued their solid start to their initial campaign. Delgado now leads the team with seven scores on the season.
Â
"We played hard. It was a good game but we still need to work on scoring when we're a man up. If you don't score on exclusion goals in water polo you don't win." Head Coach
Bill Harris said.
Â
With not too much time in between contests, the Rams fell flat in the second match against the hosting Bison. After a rare scoreless first period, Bucknell exploded for a 10-1 run over the final three frames to gain the victory. DeFontes was the lone Fordham player to get on the scoreboard, his second of the day and third of the season.
Â
"There were a lot of opportunities. We worked really hard on defense but we were just absolutely flat with our shooting and scoring. We'll recharge our batteries and take on two good programs tomorrow." Harris said.
Â
Alex Jahns made nine saves over three quarters before giving way to senior
Patrick Harrigan.
Â
Tomorrow, the Rams face off against Mercyhurst at 10:30 a.m. and George Washington at 4.
