Notes* Fordham freshman forward
Christian Sengfelder was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, and the fourth time overall this season, on Monday. He averaged 13.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg in two games last week for the Rams, including recording his second double-double of the year, scoring 12 points and adding ten rebounds in a loss at Richmond on Wednesday night. He followed that with a 15-point, nine-rebound effort in a 69-55 win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday in the Rose Hill Gym, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
Bryan Smith* Fordham freshmen
Eric Paschall and
Chris Sengfelder are the only set of freshman teammates to be averaging more than 10.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg. Paschall is third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring with a 17.5 ppg average while also pulling down 5.4 rpg, while Sengfelder is averaging 11.3 ppg and 7.2 rpg. The only other freshman combo that was averaging 10.0 ppg and 5.0 rpg earlier this year were Purdue's Isaac Haas and Vince Edwards but Haas is now averaging 8.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg while Edwards is averaging 9.3 ppg and 4.8 rpg.
* The 2014-2015 Fordham men's basketball squad is becoming adept at taking away the ball. Through games of February 19, the Rams are sixth in the Atlantic 10, averaging 6.7 steals/game, including a season-high eleven in the South Carolina State game on Dec. 31. Junior
Mandell Thomas leads the Rams with 53 steals, ranking second in the conference (2.2/game).
* Through games of February 19, the Fordham Rams have the Atlantic 10's third leading scorer, and top freshman scorer, in freshman guard
Eric Paschall (17.5 ppg) while
Mandell Thomas is second in the conference in steals (2.2/game). The Rams also have the fifth leading rebounder in junior forward
Ryan Rhoomes (8.8 rpg) while Rhoomes is also seventh in the conference in blocked shots, averaging 1.3/game, and Thomas is seventh in assists with a 3.4 apg average.
* Over the past six games, the Fordham offense has heated up, scoring over 70 points in five of the contests and averaging 75.3 ppg over that stretch.
* Part of the Ram's recent success in scoring is due to the improvement in free throw shooting. Fordham is shooting 71.5 percent (338-473) from the charity stripe in 2014-2015, second best in the Atlantic 10.
Over the past nine games, the Rams are shooting almost 80.0 percent (143-181/79.0%) from the line.
apropos of nothing: Davidson is located on Lake Norman in northern Mecklenburg County and is named for Davidson University. It's a small town of about 10,000 residents and its web site touts that the city has "a local post office, a place to catch up on the latest news from neighbors." Drive-thrus are banned in the city.
