BRONX, N.Y. -- The Fordham women's volleyball team was defeated in three sets Saturday night by George Washington inside the Charles E. Smith Center in Atlantic 10 play, as the home team won by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-18. With the loss, the Rams fall to 8-18 (2-6 A-10) on the season, while the Colonials improve to 17-8 (6-3 A-10) overall.
Offensively, Fordham was led by freshman
Breanna Jones' 13 kills, while sophomore
Emily Fronk dished out 30 assists. Senior
Brennan Delsing recorded 14 digs on defense, and freshman
Olivia LaPorta registered four total blocks.
George Washington led wire-to-wire in the opening set, as the Rams trailed by no more than three over the first half. With the home team leading 13-10, the Colonials rattled of seven straight to increase their lead to 20-10, before taking the set, 25-16, for a 1-0 lead.
The second set was close in the beginning stages, but with a 9-8 advantage, George Washington tallied eight in a row to take a 17-8 lead. Fordham battled back to within six, before the Colonials advanced to a victory of 25-16 and a 2-0 lead.
Trailing by three at 10-7 in the third set, the Rams used a 5-2 spurt started by a Jones' kill and completed by a service ace from Fronk, which deadlocked the set at 12-12. However, the home team took control after scoring seven of the next nine points to take a 19-14 advantage.
Fordham scored the next two points to climb within three, but it was not enough, as George Washington clinched the final set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
The Rams return to action Friday, Oct. 30 when they welcome Saint Louis inside the Rose Hill Gym for their annual "Dink Pink" match to raise money for breast cancer. Also, the program will host a Student/Faculty Volleyball Tournament Tuesday, Oct. 27. Please click
