The Fordham water polo team started its 2014 campaign on Saturday at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland.

A shorthanded Rams' team, playing without two of its top returning scorers, got the tournament started with a 9-6 win over Mercyhurst.

The Rams led throughout the match, starting with a 2-1 lead after the first quarter and holding a 5-2 edge at halftime. Fordham then extended the lead to 8-3 after three periods before the final score of 9-6.

R.J. Simmons and
Peter Bergum led the scoring for Fordham with two goals each, while
Bobby Wurtz, Davis Defontes,
Patrick Reyes,
Ethan Vandeventer, and
Eric Minowitz each had one tally. In goal,
Noah LeBeau made 11 stops in the win.

In match two of the day, 16
th-ranked Navy knocked of Fordham by a 12-2 score.

The Rams played the Midshipmen tough in the first half, as the match was tied at one after the first quarter. However a four-goal outburst in the second quarter gave Navy a 5-1 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

For Fordham, Simmons and
Mike Hay scored for Fordham with LeBeau making eight stops in net.

The Rams finish up play at the Navy Invitational on Sunday with matches against Washington & Jefferson and Salem International.
