Box Score Box Score The Fordham volleyball team opened its 2014 season on Friday in California at the San Francisco Invitational, as the Rams took on the Georgia Bulldogs of the SEC. The Rams would take a set off the Bulldogs, but eventually fell three sets to one by scores of 25-13, 25-10, 23-25, and 25-8.
"Tonight, we showed what kind of level we can and want to play at," said head coach
Gini Ullery after the match.
Georgia clicked on offense in the opening set, as the team hit .417, while holding Fordham to just a .027 hitting percentage. Georgia racked up three of its 15 team blocks in the opening set.
Set two was more of the same with Georgia holding the Rams to a negative hitting percentage on the strength of four team blocks defensively, while hitting .429 offensively in a 15-point set win.
Fordham got on the board in the third set with a 25-23 set win. The set saw 16 tie scores with the last coming at 23 all.
Brennan Delsing and
Brianna O'Neil then came through with back-to-back kills for Fordham to send the match to a fourth set. The Rams hit .382 as a group in the set with four team blocks.
"When we took care of the ball, we were able to execute, and that allowed us to take the third set," said Ullery.
Georgia however closed out the match in the fourth set, racking up eight blocks in the final stanza. The Bulldogs scored 14 of the first 18 points to open up a 10-point lead, eventually winning the set, 25-8.
For Fordham,
Lisa Hipp led the way with 10 kills and eight digs, while Delsing had six kills and eight digs.
Abigail Konovodoff dished out 26 assists to go with three kills and five digs with O'Neil adding seven kills and five digs.
Sarah Skelton, in her first action as a Ram, had five kills and four blocks.
The Fordham volleyball team concludes play at the San Francisco Invitational on Saturday, August 30
th, as the Rams take on host San Francisco at 3:30 PM Eastern and SMU at 8:00 PM Eastern.
