Photo Gallery Bronx, N.Y. (November 29, 2014) – The Fordham University men's basketball Rams couldn't feed off the momentum of the football team's NCAA FCS Championship game win earlier in the day on Saturday, falling to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 72-66, in the Rose Hill Gym.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-4 while UMES improves to 2-6.
Christian SengfelderFordham found out the power of experience in the game as the Hawks started three seniors and two juniors to two juniors and three freshmen starters for the Rams. But one of the Fordham freshmen had a big night, as
Eric Paschall led all scorers in the game with 25 points, shooting 9-16 from the field, and he added six rebounds.
The game started slowly with UMES holding aa 7-6 lead just over six minutes into the game before the Hawks used a 10-4 run to go up 17-10 midway through the period.
The Hawks led 19-12 a little over a minute later when the Rams started to chip away at the Maryland Eastern Shore advantage, scoring six straight, three from
Antwoine Anderson, to make it a one-point game, 19-18, with 6:35 left.
The Rams trailed by two, 24-22, with 3:13 remaining after a
Christian Sengfelder free throw but UMES went on an 8-2 run to take a 32-24 lead before a
Ryan Rhoomes put back at the buzzer cut the Fordham deficit to six, 32-26, at the intermission.
Maryland Eastern Shore netted four of the first six points of the second half and held a seven point lead , 37-30, 2:32 into the half before using a 9-4 spurt to take its biggest lead of the day, 46-34, with 14:09 remaining.
The Rams mounted a comeback attempt, going on a 14-4 run to make it a two-point game, 50-48, following a
Mandell Thomas jumper with 10:48 on the clock. Paschall scored five of the 14 points in the run for the Rams.
Fordham trailed by two three more times over the next ten minutes, the final time at 64-62, following a three-point play from Paschall but the Rams could get no closer.
Thomas finished with 13 points for the Rams while Anderson added ten points, five rebound and five assists.
The Rams return to action on Monday night, December 1, as they host the Siena College Saint in the Rose Hill Gym at 7:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on SportsNet NY (SNY).
