Behind some hot shooting from Damika Martinez and Joy Adams, the Iona Gaels spoiled the Fordham Rams' home opener on Friday, defeating the Rams, 72-51, at the Rose Hill Gym.

The game marked just the fifth loss by the Rams at home over the past three seasons.

Iona started the game with a 15-2 run over the first five minutes of action, as Martinez netted eight points in that stretch.

The Gaels ballooned that lead to as many as 20 points at 31-11 with 9:13 remaining in the first half.  A good portion off that lead was due to Fordham turnovers, as the Gaels scored 14 points off those turnovers, most leading to fast break baskets at the offensive end.

Fordham would trail by 18 at halftime, 42-24, before they began to cut into the Gaels' lead in the second half.  Emily Tapio connected on six points early in the second half, while Asnate Fomina hit a three-pointer to bring Fordham within 12, 49-37.

The push by the Rams then went cold, going over five minutes without a basket.  Iona took advantage, building the lead back to 22 points, a lead the team would not relinquish.

Iona finished the game with 26 points off 19 Fordham turnovers, while also outscoring the Rams on the fast break, 16-0.  Martinez led all scorers with 27 points, seven rebounds, and four steals, while Adams had a double-double with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and five steals.

For Fordham, Tapio tied a career-high with 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go with five boards, two blocks, two steals, and two assists.  Khadijah Gibson also netted a career-high for the Rams with six points and an assist.

The Fordham women's basketball team is back in action on Sunday, November 16th, as the Rams travel to Syracuse for a match-up with the Orange, starting at noon.  The game can be heard live on WFUVsports.org.
