Photo Gallery Bronx, N.Y. (October 24, 2014) – The match was the first for the Davidson College volleyball squad in the Rose Hill Gym and Fordham University didn't treat its guest with any Southern Hospitality as the Rams defeated the Wildcats, 3-1, in an Atlantic 10 match on Dig Pink Night as the Rams raised money for the Side-Out Foundation for breast cancer awareness.
With the win, Fordham improves to 2-20 overall, 2-6 in the Atlantic 10, while Davidson falls to 3-15 overall, 1-7 in the conference.
Fordham won the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-21, before Davidson came back to take the third, 25-17. The fourth set was hotly contested but the Rams won 28-26 to take the match.
Sarah Skelton with the game-winnerBrianna O'Neil led Fordham with a game-high 18 kills to go with ten digs as she recorded her third double-double of the year.
Sarah Skelton added a season-high 13 kills, hitting .500 in the match, and seven blocks, while
Abigail Konovodoff finished with 38 assists and 18 digs.
The Rams used a 7-0 run early in the first set to turn a 5-4 deficit into an 11-5 lead on a Davidson attack error. The Wildcats cut the Fordham lead to four, 13-9, later in the set but four straight Fordham points gave the Rams a 17-9 lead following a
Brennan Delsing kill. The Rams extended the lead to ten, 20-10, on a
Molly Oshinski service ace and went on to the 25-13 win.
In set two, Davidson led 13-10 following a Fordham attack error, but the Rams scored three of the next four points to pull to within one, 14-13, on a Skelton kill. The set would be tied three times from that point, the final at 17 when three straight Oshinski kills gave Fordham the lead for good, 20-17. The Rams hit .364 in set two after averaging .333 in the first set.
The Fordham offense cooled off in set three as the Rams hit just .023 which allowed Davidson to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Rams would battle back to pull to within one, 14-13, on an attack error but that was as close as they would get.
The fourth set went back and forth and with neither team leading by more than four. Fordham had the four-point lead, 16-12, on a Skelton kill but the Wildcats then went on a 8-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. The Rams knotted the set 21 on an attack error and then took a 22-21 lead on a Konovodoff service ace. But the two squads alternated points from then on until the Rams scored on a Skelton kill to take a 27-26 lead and a second Skelton kill to win the set, 28-26.
Oshinski added eight kills and 20 digs for the Rams while
Grace Muller finished with 17 digs and seven assists.
The Rams return to action on Sunday, October 26, as they host the VCU Rams in an Atlantic 10 matchup in the Rose Hill Gym at 1:00 PM.
